How do I verify a contractor is licensed?
Start by asking the contractor directly for their license number and the issuing authority. Licensing is trade-specific: plumbers and HVAC mechanics are typically licensed through your state's plumbing and mechanical systems licensing board; electrical contractors are licensed through your state's electrical licensing authority; general construction contractors register with your state licensing board. You can look up license status online through your state's professional licensing bureau online or through your state's contractor registration database. Before any work begins, also ask for a current certificate of general liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage. Confirm the coverage limits are adequate for your project—at minimum $1 million in general liability. Should I get multiple quotes from contractors?
Yes—always get at least two or three quotes before hiring any contractor for significant work. When collecting quotes, give each contractor a clear description of the project so you can make accurate comparisons. Ask each to break out labor and materials separately when possible, and confirm what's included: demolition, permits, materials, cleanup, and warranty.
