Hiring hvac contractors: what to know
HVAC contractors install, service and repair furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps and ductwork. HVAC contractors replace furnaces and central air conditioners, install heat pumps and ductless mini-splits, perform seasonal tune-ups, seal and balance ductwork, add humidifiers and air filtration, and respond to no-heat emergencies.

How to hire a HVAC technician
- Ask for a load calculation. A Manual J calculation sizes equipment for your actual home.
- Compare equipment line by line. Match model numbers, efficiency ratings and warranty terms across quotes.
- Verify mechanical licensing. Iowa and several neighboring states license HVAC/mechanical work.
- Ask about rebates. A good contractor helps you claim utility rebates and tax credits.
- Get maintenance terms. Ask what tune-ups are included and what voids the warranty.
Red flags to watch for
- Sizes the system by square footage alone
- Pressures you to replace a system without a written diagnosis
- Cannot provide model numbers in the quote
- Will not register the equipment warranty for you
Licensing
HVAC is a licensed mechanical trade in Iowa and is licensed or registered at state or local level elsewhere in the region. Technicians handling refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification.
Best time to hire
Book furnace tune-ups in September–October and AC service in April–May. Replacements are easiest to schedule in spring and fall, outside the peak heating and cooling rush.
