How to hire a remodeler
- Define your goals and budget. A clear wish list and budget range makes bids comparable.
- Check portfolios and references. Look for completed projects similar to yours.
- Ask about design help. Decide whether you need a designer or a design-build remodeler.
- Get a fixed-price contract. Include specifications, allowances and a schedule.
- Plan a contingency. Set aside 10–20% for surprises behind walls.
Red flags to watch for
- Will not provide a written contract
- Asks for more than a third of the price up front
- No references from the last two years
- Avoids talking about permits
Licensing in Iowa
Remodelers fall under state contractor registration or licensing (Iowa registration, Minnesota residential remodeler license, Wisconsin Dwelling Contractor certification) and local permits.
Iowa requires anyone earning more than $2,000 a year from construction work to register with the Iowa Division of Labor. Electricians are licensed by the Electrical Examining Board, and plumbers, HVAC and mechanical contractors by the Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board. Radon testers and mitigators must be certified by the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services.
