FAQs about Bathroom Remodeling
How long does a bathroom remodel take?
A basic bathroom refresh (new vanity, toilet, fixtures, paint) takes 1–2 weeks. A mid-range remodel with new tile, shower surround, and flooring takes 2–4 weeks. A full gut renovation with plumbing relocation and custom tile takes 4–8 weeks. Tile work drives the timeline — shower tile installation alone can take 3–5 days plus cure time. Plan for the bathroom to be completely unavailable during the project. If your home has only one full bathroom, discuss temporary alternatives (portable facilities) with your contractor.
What is the most important thing in a bathroom remodel?
Waterproofing. The shower and tub area must be properly waterproofed before any tile is installed. Improper waterproofing is the #1 cause of bathroom remodel failures, leading to mold, rot, and structural damage behind walls and under floors. Ask your contractor specifically about their waterproofing system — they should use a sheet or liquid membrane (Kerdi, RedGard, Hydroban, or similar) on all wet-area walls and the shower floor. Cement board alone is NOT waterproof. This is the invisible element that determines whether a bathroom remodel lasts 20 years or 5.
